Creative writing challenges
Hello! It's been a while since I last posted anything and to say. To simply say that I've been busy is an understatement; I've had exams, assignments and work, and to balance all that with free time has been very difficult. Weirdly enough, though we have this exam week every period, none of my exams were held during it, but instead the week before it.
But, enough about that! This blog post is about creative writing challenges! As I mentioned in a previous post, I have had some difficulties finding creative writing challenges for myself, as well as the time to do them. I think the biggest problem is that I'm not actually a writer, and most of the challenges I found were tailored towards authors struggling with ideas or a writer's block. I still found the challenges interesting, as they were often about anything and everything, and I believe that an actual author might also find them useful.
I tried four simple ones from the website Imagine Forest (I will link it below). It's a page that offers over 100 different challenges and other ways to boost your imagination, which overall makes it a very useful and fun page. I tried looking at different websites too, but as said, those challenges were longer, meant for actual stories, and I wasn't really looking for that.
As for the challenges I did, I picked ones that didn't require me to write a story or to get too personal. Many of the challenges asked to write about your own experiences, for example to describe your most painful memory, and I'm not quite comfortable writing about that for an unknown number of people to read.
That aside, here are the four challenges that I did!
Pick a colour and start a sentence with it.
- Red, like the wine he spilled all over the couch.
- White, untouched snow gives me a sense of peace unlike anything else.
- Black is the colour of the night, and I often prefer it over the brightness of the day.
- Yellow doesn't suit me, but it means sunshine and warmth, and I've always viewed it as a joyful, happy colour.
- Blue is used to describe melancholy but also peace and freedom.
Use a random word generator and make a paragraph with the word you get.
'growth'
Making mistakes, struggling, and learning from all of that, is part of growing up. While no one likes to fail, I firmly believe that failure is the best teacher of all. I don't necessarily think that shaming anyone is the right way to go but knowing your own limits and the rules we must comply by, is extremely important for mutual coexistence. But that is, of course, only possible if people are allowed a second chance and given the needed space for growth.
Complete this sentence in 10 different ways: Every time I look out of the window, I…
- Every time I look out of the window, I see the sky.
- Every time I look out of the window, I am reminded about how cold it's getting.
- Every time I look out of the window, I can see someone else doing the same in the opposite building.
- Every time I look out of the window, I think to myself that I should go out.
- Every time I look out of the window, I can see some local alcoholics walking by.
- Every time I look out of the window, I see my cat get up in hopes of food from the corner of my eye.
- Every time I look out of the window, I wish I could do something fun instead.
- Every time I look out of the window, I wonder if someone sees me.
- Every time I look out of the window, I stretch and wonder if I should exercise.
- Every time I look out of the window, I can see the day go by.
In exactly 100 words, describe your bedroom.
My bedroom is the largest room in my apartment. I would say that it is even needlessly large for someone, who lives alone. I have my queen-sized bed against one wall, a stool at the feet of it and a nightstand at the other end. I also have a scratching tree for my cat, which he can use to jump from my bed to the windowsill. There is only one window, which is large enough to cover one of the walls. Then I have a desk, a shelf for my favourite books and three carpets. Simple and comfortable, like me!
I'm not sure if I will be able to do more creative writing challenges but I will keep an eye out for them. There's a chance I might bump into some even on my free time, scrolling through social media or such.
